摘要：Research has shown that prejudice and negative attitudes toward those who are experiencing mental illness are widespread, but those attitudes reduce the quality of life and recovery of individuals experiencing such problems. In this article, we use a survey to evaluate the extent and causes of negative attitudes among the public in three countries: Iceland, the United States, and Germany. Our results indicate the existence of widespread prejudice and negative attitudes in all three countries. We also show that people across the three countries are more negative toward individuals experiencing mental illness if they define the condition as an illness. Finally, the results indicate that prejudice and negative attitudes toward this group are less common in Iceland and in Germany than in the United States. Rannsóknir hafa leitt í ljós að fordómar og neikvæð viðhorf í garð þeirra sem eiga við geðræn vandamál að stríða eru afar útbreidd, en slík viðhorf virðast skerða lífsgæði og batahorfur einstaklinga sem þjást af vandamálum af þessum toga. Í þessari grein notum við spurningalistakönnun til þess að meta umfang og orsakir neikvæðra fordóma meðal almennings í þremur löndum: Íslandi, Bandaríkjunum og Þýskalandi. Niðurstöður okkar staðfesta verulega útbreiðslu fordóma og neikvæðra viðhorfa í öllum þremur löndunum. Jafnframt kemur í ljós að fólk í öllum löndunum sýnir neikvæðari viðbrögð gagnvart einstaklingum sem eiga við geðrænt vandamál að stríða þegar það skilgreinir ástandið sem sjúkdóm. Loks benda niðurstöður til þess að fordómar og neikvæð viðhorf gagnvart þessum hópi hafi minni útbreiðslu á Íslandi og Þýskalandi en í Bandaríkjunum.
