摘要：Information Retrieval methods occupy a key role inthe present knowledge society. Access to Literature, analysisof data and integration of knowledge are key components ofbiomedical research. Although there are several methods andsearch tools exist, there is a huge need and demand for betterapproaches. Many of the researchers and scientists are losingvaluable time and other resources because of the lack of accessto right literature. This paper analyses the critical role ofknowledge access mechanisms and challenges that exist inbiomedical research with a focus on omics disciplines.Further, it surveys the current state of art to address theneeds of biomedical researchers for better and efficient accessto information and better integration of data and knowledgethat is extracted from biomedical literature. The differentdata sources existing on biomedical literature, differentexisting search tools used to access the biomedical citations,bibliographic data sources, full text literature, citation databases existing and challenges in accessing the literature arepresented. This paper also gives a critical analysis on variousmethods used in search and query optimization for reducingthe response time of query processing with challenges inaccessing biomedical literature.
