摘要:It is a strange kind of set up to sit on a panel which ostensibly is devoted to Memory and Its Discontents1, but tends to veer towards one’s own book of mainly Joycean memories. Its title, lifted from Finnegans Wake, our inexhaustible quarry, indicates that we remember but indistinctly and selectively at best. It is oddly uncomfortable (and yes, I admit and appreciate, at the same time eminently flattering) to become the object of public attention. What happened is that “collective” memory often narrowed down to individual ones in one particular book. In self-defense I have to put on record that I did my damnedest to direct what discussions there were towards general issues.
