  • 摘要:Despite the global interest in translation, which has led to the current expansionof research in Translation Studies, there is still a great deal of fuzziness aroundhow we think about translations and translators, especially in the Englishspeakingworld. The old discourse of negativity that focusses not on what canbe gained in translation, but rather on what is lost, is still, unfortunately, to beheard. In Britain, the dominance of English as a world language, or ratherEnglishes, given the variations of English now in use, combined with thedecision taken by the Blair government in 2004 to abolish compulsory foreignlanguage learning in English secondary schools has not helped the cause oftranslation, since there is a strong view that it is not worthwhile to study otherlanguages, given the growing number of people who use English. The term‘Translation Studies’ has on occasions not been taken seriously by universitymanagers, and has merely been used cynically to try to rebrand foreignlanguage programmes and so shore up language departments that aresuffering the dire consequences of the UK’s ignorant foreign languageeducational policy. Negative attitudes in the English-speaking world towardstranslation are, unfortunately, not recent but are long-standing. In the theatreworld, English practice is to market foreign plays as having been ‘translated’ bynative speaking playwrights, with no credit given to the actual translator, who isonly paid a fraction of what the famous playwright earns. The fact that thispractice is so embedded in the English context, including at the National Theatre in London, serves to underline further the general marginalisation of the translator
