摘要：Having as guideline some basic principles of genre theories, this paper aims at describing personal e-mails in English, as part of an ongoing project with pedagogical implications. Data were collected from 30 e-mails written by keypals from different countries. Our analysis focuses on the social and cultural aspects of the genre (mainly on the concept of communicative purpose) but also considers language and formal conventions. We conclude with the idea that one of the main features of this genre is precisely its hybrid nature.
