摘要：In this paper we study the real possibilities of the euro in its role of international currency. The focus is centred on the analysis of the different variables that settle the status of a currency in relation to the other ones in the different funetions tbat economic literature atributes to money. The main conclusion of this paper is that, in the long-rin, it seems not foresecable that the euro can displace to dic dollar as the first currency, although the consolidation of the EU will provide te necessary conditions so that the euro could reach a privileged position as an international currency. 1.
