摘要:In the last few decades, the changes in the agricultural markets determined a sharp increase in the competitive pressure. Farmers reacted to these changes using a broad set of competitive strategies in order to ensure the surviving of their operations. Despite these efforts, the data reported by ISTAT show a remarkable decrease in the number of farms in the last five years (-19.7%). By using multivariate analysis methods, we show that this figure is the result of a composite trend. While small non-commercial farms suffered from the increased competitive pressure, large market-oriented and innovative farms have been able to face the new challenges. The empirical analysis shows that it exists a non-negligible number of farmers that are able to compete and to invest financial resources and personal labor in their farm operation with success.
