Mentre i dati raccolti dai telescopi da terra e dallo spazio evidenziano la struttura filamentare delle nubi cosmiche e la loro stretta relazione con il campo magnetico galattico, gli astronomi teorici cercano di spiegarne l'origine e le caratteristiche fisiche con modelli magnetoidrodinamici sempre più elaborati.
