摘要:In this paper, we analyze Chichisbéu, character from Antônio José da Silva’s (1705-1739) play O Precipício de Faetonte ( Phaeton’s Fall ), performed in 1738, at the Teatro do Bairro Alto, Lisbon, Portugal. Starting from different but converging theoretical perspectives, we aim to understand the underexplored dramaturgy of that time as well as Da Silva’s joco-serious scripts. As a tragicomic form originally Spanish, the character of ‘gracioso’ is the main comic representative in this theatrical genre. This study aims to comprehend this character (Chichisbéu, in this case) within his relations with the ‘galán’ and the relation between the playwright’s work and the precepts and techniques of theatrical writing of that time.
