摘要：The difficulties that arise when identifying the urban and the rural in Brazil lie in the use of concepts and methodologies that result inadequate, since they end up giving a distorting view of the studied municipalities’ reality. In Brazil, the criteria employed currently for such delimitation are considered old-fashioned, since they originated from the Decree-Law 311 of 1938 and need to be updated. For these reasons, this study intends to analyze the territory of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), in order to delimit the urban and the rural from an alternate methodological proposal. Three methodologies for delimiting the urban and the rural (the official one, the OCDE’s and that of José Eli da Veiga) are used in order to study their differences and similarities and thus propose methodological criteria appropriate for the municipalities’ spatial dynamics. This text seeks to somehow contribute to the debates concerning the emergence of a new paradigm and of different and new typologies for such classification.
