摘要:First published in 1997, Music Papers: Articles and Talks By a Canadian Composer, 1961 – 1994 is written by John Beckwith, a Canadian composer with a sizeable catalogue of art music. In his 256-page book Beckwith presents a compilation of articles, discussions and reviews from his large catalogue of writing primarily pertaining to the topic of Canadian music and its composers as an aspect of Canadian culture and national identity. Music Papers provides substantial historical information about Canadian music in the twentieth-century, personal insight into Beckwith’s experiences in Canada as an active composer, and many of Beckwith’s own concerns regarding music in general. One of the most important issues the author discusses throughout the book is the struggle to define the culturally exclusive attributes of Canadian music for those in Canada and abroad. Through Beckwith’s essays, one will discover the unfortunate lack of information found in texts on Canadian music written abroad, the changing musical life in Toronto, the values of a Canadian composer, and more. While this compilation of written works considers numerous serious topics regarding Canadian music, Beckwith is able to provide stimulating and effective discussions on the subject in his personable style of writing.
