摘要:Collocation is the way words combine in a language to produce natural-sounding speech and writing. For example which words may occur in constructions with which other words. Some words occur together often, other words may occur together occasionally, and some combinations of words are not likely to occur. The writer chose the topic “Shift in Translating English Collocations into Indonesian” because some students of English have difficulties understanding collocation. The result of the study may be useful for the students and teachers of English in translation. The problems of this study are: does shift occur in translating English collocations into Indonesian?; If it does, to what extent does shift occur in translating English collocations into Indonesian? and what types of shift are there in translation of English collocations into Indonesian?. This study aims at describing whether shift occurs in translating English collocations into Indonesian and to find out the types of shift in the translation of English collocations into Indonesian. Analysis of the data consists of three concurrent flows of activities i.e: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. Finally, it is concluded that shift occurs very few with the translation of collocation and there are two kinds of shifts in translating English collocations into Indonesian, namely structural shifts and class shifts.
