摘要:Our article considers a hitherto unpublished document of great ethnographic interest: the report written by an explorer hired by Basque entrepreneur Horacio Echevarrieta in 1921. The author details his journey in search of iron mines thought to exist in an area of the central Rif beyond the control of the Spanish colonial army. His account draws a vivid picture of the Protectorate in 1921, a hotbed of unscrupulous individuals: ambitious warlords, dishonest explorers, rogues, mining agents, spies and indigenous local people with different interests and degrees of acculturation. Our study analyses the colonial context and highlights the hybrid identities generated by the presence of European capital in the area.
