摘要:In the supply chain suppliers play a pivotal role in the success or failure of the consumers who sits at the end of the chain. The relationship between the suppliers and consumers is symbiotic in nature in that one may not exist without the other. Thus, they need to establish a synergy based on the principles and objectives of procurement upon which their relationship shall be evaluated. Currently, ICT hardware and software form the core of goods and services acquired by Moi University with the intent of delivering on its core mandate in teaching and research. Therefore, the relationship between Moi University as a consumer of ICT Products and the respective suppliers need to be evaluated in order to recommend relevant management strategies to foster the relationship. Hence, this study sought to: determine the types of ICT products procured by Moi University and the categories of suppliers from whom the products are sourced; establish the challenges inherent in the relationship between Moi University and the suppliers of ICT products; determine the strategies devised to overcome the challenges and make recommendations for mitigating the challenges inherent in the current relationship. Qualitative research approach and descriptive case study strategy were adopted for the study. The study targeted a population of 55 respondents comprising of 33 ICT staff and 22 Procurement staff. 14 respondents were purposively sampled; 10 from Procurement Unit and 4 from ICT Directorate respectively. Data was collected using open ended questionnaires and documentary reviews. The qualitative and the quantitative data obtained were analysed thematically and descriptively respectively. The study established that: computers were among the most procured ICT products and were sourced mainly from distributors. Dependence on a few pre-qualified suppliers and lack of a continuous supplier appraisal system were some of the evaluation challenges. Hence, the study recommended that the Suppliers of ICT Products must always be diversified and that ex-ante and post-ante evaluation of the suppliers should be carried out continuously. In addition, open tendering through e-procurement should be adopted as way of interaction between the University and the suppliers of ICT products.
