摘要:Distance education can be seen as a springboard for creating opportunities to individuals who have no access to physically present higher education. One of the factors that influence the growth of distance learning in Brazil may be the fact that public universities are mostly located in major centers. Thus, they do not absorb the demand for individuals seeking professional and academic qualification who often belong to less privileged regions. This article aimed to analyze the characteristics of the teachers’ professional competence of the Public Administration course of State University of Minas Gerais program. This research adopted a qualitative approach with the method of case study and the data were treated by the technique of content analysis. The perceptions of two groups, teachers and coordinators working in the distance education course of Public Administration were investigated. According to the interviewed teachers the competences which stood out were the cognitive and the behavioral ones. Concerning the coordinators’ perceptions the results include the functional and behavioral competences. There is a constant need to improve the competence of teachers who work directly in this modality. In Distance Education the student’s profile is different, requiring other competences distinct from the traditional education model.
