摘要:This article examines one of the pillars of business cooperation: the governance of inter-organizational networks (IONs), characterized by Albers (2005),Theurl (2005) and Provan and Kenis (2007), as the internal organizational and coordinating elements of IONs. These authors conjecture that governance differs depending on network characteristics and the challenges these networks face. The aim of the study was to analyze the influence of contextual factors on the governance of interorganizational networks. Specifically we analyzed the number of participants, the network geographic coverage and the network time of existence. In total, 34 business networks from various Brazilian states participated in the survey. The results show that the networks differ in their governance systems, both in terms of centralization of decision-making and in terms of levels of formalization, control, incentives and sanctions. These findings allow us to conclude that horizontal networks adopt different governance systems, as suggested by Provan and Kenis (2007), because of the contextual factors analyzed. The results show the challenges faced by interorganizational networks that need to grow and find ways to keep the cooperative concept based on participation, without losing efficiency and speed of decision-making.
