摘要：The article is based on the diaries of John Romeyn Brodhead (1814-1873), written 1846-1849, the period in which he acted as Secretary of the United States Legation to the Court of St.James under George Bancroft (1800 - 1891). They present an intimate glimpse of the personalities, politics, and culture of the period.
