摘要:Since its initial publication over a decade ago, theOAIS Reference Model, its concepts and terminology, have become essential to the digital preservationdiscourse. In this discourse, the topos – or myth – of“OAIS compliance” continues to play a central role asarchives and repositories seek to demonstrate theirfitness for the challenge of digital preservation. Afterbriefly considering what OAIS is (and can be usedfor) and what it is not – namely, an abstract referencemodel, but notan architecturethat can beimplementeddirectly –, we willuse the GESIS DataArchive for theSocial Sciences asan example of mapping OAIS to an existing archive. Wewill then explore positive effects and benefits, as wellas difficulties of completing this process. Thus, such amapping can be taxing for an established archive: Asmost of the workflows have grown and proven theiradequacy over a considerable period of time, takinga step back and viewing these processes from a newperspective is a challenge in itself3.
