摘要：One of the roles the DDI standard can perform is toserve as a medium for the transfer of metadata anddata across both space and time. A crucial componentof this role is the ability to represent the data andmetadata contained in common data analysis andmanagement packages. This paper describes anexperiment using the program Stat/Transfer to movedatasets among five popular packages with DDILifecycle as an intermediary format.We created a dataset in each of the five packages andthen exported it to DDI Lifecycle via Stat/Transfer. Wealso created a DDI Lifecycle instance and an associateddelimited dataset, containing as many of the metadataelements found in any of the five packages possibleand then exportedit to each of thepackages. Success orfailure to transfer wasrecorded for a set ofgeneric metadataelements identified inan earlier paper. Using acommercial file transferprogram helped identifywhich metadata elements were transferrable througha generally available machine actionable process.The experiment revealed some areas for potentialimprovements to DDI as well as suggestions for dataanalysis packages and research practices.
