摘要:Sport and educational systems often categorize children into agecohorts based on an arbitrary cut-off date to ensure fairness. Such wellintendedmethods result in relatively older children garnering additionalopportunities for success. We provide evidence that Triple Crown breedersand/or owners deliberately time the births of thoroughbred horses to occur inthe early months of the calendar year to maximize their chances of winningraces. This birth distribution is significantly different from what we wouldexpect to see in the wild. As the general population becomes betteracquainted with the relative age effect, parents may resort to similarlyextreme measures to gain an advantage in the realms of sport and education.
