摘要:In this study, we examined the association of cigarette smoking, serum lipid level and blood pressure with white blood cell (WBC) count. The subjects were 1, 243 male factory workers employed at a chemical factory in Osaka, Japan. The results obtained were as follows. The WBC count of smokers was significantly higher than that of ex-and non-smokers (p<0.01). WBC count was greater in high-consumption smokers than in low-consumption smokers and in long-duration smokers than in short-duration smokers (p<0.01). Serum total cholesterol and triglyceride were significantly related to WBC count in smokers and ex-/nonsmokers, as was systolic, but not diastolic, blood pressure. In conclusion, this study of the joint association of cigarette smoking, serum lipid levels and blood pressure with WBC count as a risk factor for coronary heart disease confirms previously reported results in Japanese factory workers.
