摘要:Background and Objectives: There are limited published data on the clinical and epidemiological profiles of severe malaria from urban and rural centres in Gujarat. Malaria is one of the major public health problems and around 1.5 million laboratories confirmed cases are reported annually by the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP). Out of the total malaria cases, around 50% cases are due to Plasmodium falciparum. Among the rest of the cases, major cases are due to Plasmodium vivax followed by Plasmodium ovale. Methods: To assess the clinical and epidemiological profiles of severe malaria, Prospective, single centre study was carried out for 1 year and 6 months duration in 64 patients in the Medicine department of Guru Gobind Singh Hospital, Jamnagar, a tertiary care teaching hospital. Analyzed data included demographic, clinical and laboratory parameters. Results: Out of 64 patients, majority patients were in the age group of 12-30 years (59.68%), males (68.75%) as compared to females (31.25%), rural (60.93%) as compared to Urban (39.06%) and Labourer (29.68%) as compared to Farmer (18.75%). In our study at the time of presentation most common, symptom was fever with chills and rigors (100%), sign was tachycardia (31.25%) and complication was hepatopathy (40.62%). In this study there were patients infected by P. falciparum 43.75%, P. vivax 39.06% and both species 17.19%. Conclusion: In present study large numbers of patients were 21-30 years and rural labourer males with P. falciparum species. In present study most common symptom, signs and complication were fever with chills and rigors, tachycardia and hepatopathy respectively.
