摘要：La nivelación de las plantas suele reconocerse como uno de los conceptos centrales del pensamiento y la obra de Francisco José de Caldas. Sobre él se han dado diversas interpretaciones, pero su abordaje suele hacerse de paso y sin indagar con mucho detalle acerca de sus presupuestos y consecuencias teóricas. En este artículo, identificamos diversas perspectivas que se han ofrecido con relación al origen, la función y la definición del concepto. Nos interesa así mostrar las dificultades que se presentan en la historiografía científica al abordar este concepto, y cómo estas dificultades generan inquietudes acerca de la coherencia que existe entre las diferentes interpretaciones sobre él. En particular, defendemos la tesis de que la lectura del término “nivelación de las plantas” se ha enfocado más sobre las plantas que sobre la nivelación, es decir, más sobre la botánica que sobre la topografía. Este presupuesto historiográfico ha llevado a construir narrativas históricas que, a pesar de la dimensión topográfica explícita del propio término, lo ubican en la historia de la botánica antes que en la historia de la topografía.
其他摘要：The levelling of plants is usually recognized as one of the main concepts in the works and the thought of Francisco José de Caldas. There are different interpretations about this concept, but in general, the treatment is not very careful and does not really go into the details concerning its theoretical assumptions and consequences. In this article, we identify the diverse interpretations that historians have offered regarding the origin, the function and the definition of this concept. Our interest is to show the difficulties that the scientific historiography on Caldas faces when it deals with this concept, and how these difficulties generate uncertainty concerning the coherence that may exist between those different interpretations. In particular, we defend the thesis that the approach to the term “levelling of plants” has been focused more on the plants part than on the levelling part, that is, more on botany than on topography. This historiographic assumption has led to the construction of historical narratives that, despite the explicit topographic dimension of the term, place it in the history of botany and not in the history of topography.
