摘要:The institutionalized racism that once sub jugated the Black major ity dur ing South Africa's apartheid years gave way after 1994 to legislature that aims to bring the countr y into a new era of egalitarian- ism. A strik ing result of this has been the steady flow of young Black people achieving upward mo- bility and mak ing the transition into the middle- and upper-classes. This ar ticle e xplores young Black South Africans' lived exper iences of upward mobility, as well as their efforts to negotiate be twee n separate and often contrasting identities by applying an interpretive sociological framework to their narrative accounts.
