More than 98 % of Haitian territory has been deforested. In addition, charcoal and firewood are the cheapest and most commonly used energy sources. This project aims at offering the Haitian families a viable alternative source of energy for cooking using a home anaerobic digester. A survey has been conducted in three areas in the country (Port au Prince, Gonaïves and Cange) to identify the different substrates available for anaerobic digestion. The digester was designed based on the survey results and three treatments were established: T1 (food waste for the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince), T2 (co-digestion of pig manure, food waste and crop residues of Arachis pintoi for Cange), and T3 (food waste and pig manure for Gonaives). The biogas production results were of 550 L/kg VS with 60 % CH4 and 680 L/kg VS with 70 % CH4 for T2 and T3, respectively. The use of the proposed biodigester, as an alternative to reduce charcoal and firewood use, would promote the protection of the forests in these areas.
