An experiment of organoponic production of cucumber ( Cucumis sativus L.) was conducted at EARTH University’s Academic Crop Farm, located in Guácimo, Costa Rica, testing four substrates: compost, vermicompost, vermicompost + compost mixture (1:3) and soil as a control. The design was a randomized complete block with five replications. A list of quantitative and qualitative descriptors was used to evaluate the experiment. The results showed no statistically significant differences between the descriptors measured in the different treatments, except for the diameter of the main vine. The compost treatment yielded 28 Mg/ha and vermicompost + compost yielded 27 Mg/ha. There were statistically significant differences between different harvests but not in the overall harvest. The results showed that the vermicompost treatment was inappropriate because of the toxicity that occurred in plants. A sensory analysis revealed that the descriptors, related to the flavor and the texture of the fruit, were not useful for discriminating between treatments.
