The main goal of this project was to conduct a diagnostic of the environmental situation of the universities in Costa Rica to develop a proposal of basic indicators to help evaluate their sustainability. This was achieved through a compilation of literature on environmental education management in Costa Rica. The identification of the points of coincidence between environmental actions and the measurement of the degree of involvement of institutions of higher education in Costa Rica was studied, based in five areas: waste management, water, energy, carbon neutrality, and resources in general. With 34 universities of 63 (5 public and 29 private), interviews and surveys were conducted in addition to a literature review. Using these information sources, it was determined that the environmental situation in Costa Rican universities can be linked to their degree of commitment to the environment, their academic approach, implementation time, and Costa Rican legal requirements.
