The propuse of this study was to (a) analyse the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) in trained and untrained subjects in a bench press incremental protocol in three different intensities (Initial load [IL], maximun power [MP] and one repetition maximun [RM]) and (b) to analyse corresponding mean velocity (Velmean) and OMNI-RES values. A total of 38 subjects were differenciated in two groups: Trained Group (G1, n = 19) and Untrained Group (G2, n = 19). No significant differences were found between groups in RPE variable. The analysis of Velmean showed significant differences in the MP and RM intensities. These findings suggest that the OMNI-RES scale is a valid measure of exercise intensity for the bench press. It is advised that this is accompanied with another measure of intensity such as Velmean to allow for optimal adjustment of intensity during different training sets.
