  • 摘要:Green chemistry was developed as a revolutionary change in the ethicsof the discipline: chemistry was assuming its responsibility for environmentaland health hazards, and proposed to become one of the main actors inpreventing them. Scientists became morally obligated to make a concerted effortto reduce the toxicity of new molecules and processes. Using historicalinsights and analyses of current research in the United States and France, I addressthe relationships between green chemistry and toxicology in order toaddress the question: are chemists living up to the early ethical promise ofgreen chemistry? Twenty years after the birth of this movement, and despitethe availability of conceptual and methodological tools, it has proven difficultto integrate concerns about toxicity into green chemistry. I argue that the reasonwhy some green chemists have taken limited moral responsibility forchemical risks, is related mainly to: (1) a feeling of weak empowerment in thechain connecting innovators, producers, users and regulators of chemicals, and(2) the regulatory and academic divide that has been historically institutionalizedbetween chemistry and toxicology.
