摘要：In the summer of 2015, many people began to volunteer to help with the extensive flow of refugees arriving in and travelling through Austria. Those helping were people of all ages, with and without experiences of their own in fleeing or migrating, with and without previous volunteer work experience. A variety of (often unconscious) learning and educational processes took place. How do learning and educational processes take shape in the context of volunteer work and can political education processes be brought about? How do educational institutions react to continuing education requirements in the voluntary sector and is there a need for action? The authors examine the sociopolitical function of volunteer work between the need for solidarity and its instrumentalization, discuss the concept of solidarity and track the political education processes of the supporters in an empirical study. Their conclusion: educational institutions increasingly react with relevant course offerings that support volunteer work but mainly aim to develop diverse professional competences. There is still a clear potential for development; this area can be explicitly taken into account as a field of work for political education. (Ed.)
