摘要：The increase in the number of stray animals, associated to carelessness and ignorance of many tutors in relation to responsibility to acquire an animal and welfare of this, are the factors that motivated this study. Thus, using a form aimed to analyze the knowledge on animal welfare and responsible ownership of the tutors of dogs and cats domiciled and partially domiciled of the urban area of the district of Marcilio Dias, municipality of Canoinhas, Santa Catarina State. The data were evaluated by descriptive analyzes, and to evaluate the occurrence of association between the variables (income, education level and age) were employed the chi-square and Fisher Exact tests (p?0.05). Of the 100 owners, interviewed 58% had some knowledge about welfare, and 63% had some knowledge about responsible ownership. It was found that the knowledge of the tutors in relation to such issues is still limited and is not being put into practice. That demonstrated the need for the action of veterinarians in the instruction and guidance in relation to those issues related to public health, welfare and responsible.
