摘要：La polémica en torno al voto obligatorio es una de las más antiguas de la Democracia: fundamentada sobre las bases de que la elección debe representar a la mayoría de votantes, pero también de que en ocasiones las opciones políticas pueden no ser tales para el ciudadano. Una permanencia que es puesta a prueba en cada nueva elección, y en el creciente número de crisis políticas que padecen partidos e instituciones por todo el planeta. La fórmula del voto obligatorio puede ser de gran utilidad pese a las contradicciones intrínsecas que implica. En países sin tradición democrática, cuya población deba habituarse a la rutina electoral, puede suponer la diferencia entre el fracaso o el éxito del sistema.

A permanence which is tested in each new election and in the growing number of political crises affecting parties and institutions around the world. The formula of compulsory voting can be very useful despite the inherent contradictions it entails. In countries without any democratic tradition, where the population should get used to the electoral routine, this can make the difference between failure or success of the system.
