摘要:As one of its early names – ash-gray chalcedony – shows, the most prevalent Palaeolithic raw material inNortheast Hungary is of greyish colour. Because of the oxidation of pyrite, yellowish-brown and reddishcolouredpieces are common in the geological occurrence of the raw material. That is why the few whitecoloured debris, Palaeolithic fragments, blades and tools we know from different archaeological sites are sointeresting for us. The white pieces collected at the archaeological sites at the Upper Bagolyhegy MetarhyoliteFormation near to the town Miskolc were subjected to archaeometrical examinations (XRD, SEM-EDS, ATRFTIR)and were compared to the raw and the "white" samples we produced in the heat treatment kiln. Based onthe test results we reconstruct the process of the formation of the white coloured felsitic porphyry tolls andoutline the possible causes of it: natural fires and "fire setting".
