摘要：The purpose of this study is to establish the causes and effects of inadequate skilled artisans and the main factors that cause this shortage in the petro chemical industry. The current artisan shortfall is increasing at a rapid pace and the study was inspired by many international and local studies which demonstrate a lack of concern for the impact these shortages have on project performance, and their effects on project and maintenance time. Having identified the effects that the lack of skilled artisans have on projects and maintenance, this study will include various strategies to reduce this phenomenon in the construction industry. The findings from the study will provide recommended strategies that can be utilized to improve productivity and efficiency gains in the industry and will add value to academic knowledge which can be presented as a guideline to the contractors at the oil refinery in South Africa.
