摘要：The illustrations made by Adolfo Bellocq for José Hernández’s Martín Fierro in the 1920s imply a dispute for tradition and its reformulation: on the one hand, a dispute over this key object for national tradition against avant-garde artists and writers of his own generation, organized around a magazine that is in fact called Martín Fierro; on the other hand, a dispute over how the poem had been read by the nationalist intellectuals (like Lugones and Rojas), since interpretations still gravitated strongly towards these ideas in the 1920s. In Bellocq’s images, one can observe a re-appropriation of the criollista iconography that was being used by academic artists like Quirós, as well as an experiment with form –more related to the approach of the avant-garde– in the simultaneous operation with different codes of representation. If the illustrations are to be thought both as paratext and as transposition of a text and therefore as an act of reading and interpreting, Bellocq’s illustrations constitute the objectification of a concrete and specific way of reading and interpreting Hernández’s poem, that engages in dialogue with other contemporary interpretations.
