摘要：In this article, we aim to reassess Monteiro Lobato’s polemic against Anita Malfatti, a milestone for Brazilian Modernism, in order to rethink modern art and nationalisms in that context of strong immigration. We aim to reconsider that case with attention to Anita Malfatti’s familiar life and to women’s difficulties to work professionally at the time. This polemic reveals interesting contradictions on modern art in a peripheral country in the early twentieth century and allows us to focus on the relationships between art and social processes in that context.
