摘要:The proposal to hold a referendum on the independence of Catalonia has been the subject of intense news coverage in the Spanish media, similar to the constant political activity. This research aimed to apply the methodology of news framing, making a quantitative study supported on the application of statistics. It was posed to describe the main components of media frames used to report on this informative fact: news sources, protagonists, described actions and evaluation of the news event. Also, we wanted to know, as hipothesis, if the press from Madrid and Catalonia offered a different news framing about this issue. Beside the calculation of descriptive statistics for these variables, it was also calculated the existence of a statistically significant association between variables. A sample of the main spanish journals was selected: El País, El Mundo, ABC, La Vanguardia, El Periódico y El Punt Avui. This topic appeared on the front page of the newspapers analyzed every day, with a formal importance from high to maximum. The main sources and protagonists were the institutions and the politicians, performing political actions. The press from Madrid and Catalonia evaluated in an opposite way the news where the Catalonian or Spanish institutions were the protagonists.
