摘要:Introduction: The number of cancer cases has increased significantly in the last few years, with early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, the survival chances of the patients increase. In this scenario, the support houses have emerged with the intention of offering assistance and care resources to individuals with cancer. These individuals have their health conditions aggravated by side effects, certain limitations, and the need to stay out of their city for treatment. Objective: To know the perception of cancer patients about cohabitation in a support house. Materials and Methods: A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and cross sectional research was carried out using the Discourse of Collective Subject based on the Social Representations Theory. The sample consisted of 12 patients from the support house "Association of Volunteers Against Cancer (AVOCC)", in the city of Poços de Caldas, MG. Results: Three central ideas were identified: "Good cohabitation", "As if it were a family" and "Discernment and respect". Conclusion: To be in an environment that is more like their home, away from the stress of hospitals, becomes a contributing factor to patients. It is important for the state to intervene supporting and facilitating the life of the cancer patient by creating support houses or institutions that help and assist these patients. It was possible to observe that respect among patients is one of the secrets to living in harmony. They have among them, in the support houses, a cohabitation so good that they feel as if they were in family.
