摘要：The migration movements that have been happening in recent times, in both directions, on immigration and on emigration between Latin American countries make necessary for social security systems to be adapted to current realities and improve, through the exchange of mutual experiences, living conditions of those workers that throughout their working life have been relocated to Latin America.Thus, by applying both the Latin American Social Security Multilateral Agreement of November 10th, 2007 - created by the Organización Iberoamericana de la Seguridad Social (OISS) - and its Aplication Agreement of September 11th, 2009; the Latin American Community tries to avoid the loss of rights that may negatively affect migrants and their families, in situations of old age, disability, death and survival, travel and work in a place other than their country of origin. This circumstance may prevent them to consolidate rights in each national social security system being necessary to avoid it. This Multilateral Agreement is an essential tool to take into account the contributions made and total years of work of each worker regardless their nationality and place of residence. Therefore, it helps not only to avoid the loss of rights on pensions but also to apply the fundamental principle of equal treatment.The scope of application of this rule also extends to Portugal and Spain, being the latter a place of particular relevance to the extent that it has become in recent years the main destination of Latin American migration to Europe. In addition, taking into account that Spain and Portugal are member countries of the European Union, the Agreement reinforces the coordination of social security systems between Latin America and the European Union, which will provide Latin American workers recognition of contributions in other member states of the European Union.
