  • 摘要:Despite the numerous creations by man, the electric grid remains one of the most intricate and largest ofphysical systems ever made. Thus on the very outset it is wise, even expected, that creativity and continuous innovationbe invested in it. Further, environmental concerns, exponential increase of energy consumption translating to problemof peak demand management are also among the factors that have necessitated need for clever use of electricity. Hencethe prevalent electricity consumption behaviour, which does not mirror the current grid requirements, is reconsidered,with a view of making it an effective tool that can potentially offset need for physical expansion of the power grid.Drawing on the timely concept of the Smart Grid the role of consumers is reconceived through Demand SideManagement (DSM). The main idea presented is deft domestic appliance scheduling to smoothen the demand curve,since domestic load takes up an appreciable portion of the total generated energy. The appliance scheduling algorithmis modelled and solved using a 1970s invention, Genetic Algorithm (GA). The results indeed show conscious use ofelectricity does utilise the grid painstakingly.
