摘要:Phytoremediation is an environmental pollutants clean-up technology using plants. To get higherefficiencies, the appropriate selection of the most efficient vegetation is very important for all phytoremediationapplications. The main objectives of the study were to design, construct, and monitor the performance of a varying loadconstructed wetland and examine the pollutant removal efficiency in treating the domestic sewage. Vetiveriazizanioides commonly called Vetiver was used as the wetland vegetation under hydroponic condition over the period of5 weeks. Being a hydroponic method the vegetation was fixed on a floating base to make the plants float while theroots remained completely immersed. The studies were done with the variation of the depth of media (wastewater)along with the development of the roots of the plants. The overall performance of the system was evaluated byanalysing the parameters such as Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), andnutrients (Nitrate-Nitrogen, Phosphate and Potassium) of both the influent and effluent for an interval of 5 days. Fromthis experiment, it was observed that, the varying load constructed wetland proved to be highly efficient in the removalof BOD and COD in every 2 weeks as new roots are developed only in 2 weeks. Thus Vetiveria zizanioides was foundto be a good species for phytoremediation of domestic sewage using varying load constructed wetland system.
