摘要：The place – for its symbolic identity, load character and fervour – is full of symbolism, which is made by elements that evoke inumerous meanings to the ground one experiences. Place itself represents a symbol of affection, satisfaction, happiness and reconciliation. The symbolic character of places establish connections, which decode its past and connect it to the present. Considering the idea that places and symbols acquire meaning through emotional connections built along time, the task of understanding, reconciling and decoding symbolic geography of places are aimed by us in this text. Aiming to debate the mentioned teoric-methodological surmise related to the symbolic universe of people and of places, we will use the lived and shared experiences by the inhabitants of Ilha de Guaratiba as exemple. After all, who can be better than guaratibanos to talk about the place’s symbolic geography and the lived experience?
