摘要:The work Paseo por España by Valérie de Gasparin is part of the 19th century fashion of travelling through the Iberian Peninsula. This text, an exceptional case in the translation of travel narratives of Spain in the 19th century, appeared the same year it was published in France (1869) in the Valencian newspaper Las Provincias, property of the translator and poet Teodoro Llorente. In 1875, a seemingly full version was printed with a preface by this Valencian poet. In the present study, besides questioning the translation’s authorship, we delve into the translator’s position, regardless of who this was, when dealing with a text that, from an exotic and stereotyped point-of-view, re!ected the translator’s reality. The translator appears, in this case, as an intercultural mediator between the Countess’ text and the Spanish readers at the time.
