Improvisation in dance has been defined in comparison with choreographed dance. However, since there exist various modes and styles in dance improvisation, each mode of improvisation exceeds the definition conferred on it in comparison with choreographed dance. Therefore, each of the various modes of improvisation should be evaluated in comparison with other improvisations. Two conditions decide the modes of improvisation. One of the conditions is the precondition that the dancer acquires and knows before it begins. The other is a process condition that constrains improvisation with the passage of time. The conditions constrain the dancer’s body or mind or both when the dancers improvise. Conditions influence the relationship between the body and mind during improvisation. Thereafter, the relationship decides the modes of improvisation. In this paper, I have examined several typical examples of the modes of improvisation and analyzed the manner in which the conditions and relationship between the mind and body, which is limited by the conditions, generate movements in dance improvisation.
