摘要:Each city produced tones of solid wastes daily from households, hospitals, industry offices, marketcenters etc. Some of these were biodegradable some were non-biodegradable and hazardous waste. Wastes weredirectly thrown away on the street roads, city garbage collecting places etc. Out of which most of it remains there for alonger period of time. The problem of solid waste management has acquired an alarming dimension in developingcountries during recent decades. The quantity of solid waste generated has increased significantly and its characteristicshave changed as a result of the change in people’s lifestyles due to swift urbanization. At the core of the problems ofsolid waste management were the absence of adequate policies, enabling legislation, and an environmentally stimulatedand enlightened public. Several factors have to be considered in site selection for waste disposal. Due to theinvolvement of different parameters, deciding upon a suitable location for waste disposal is very complicated, costlyand time consuming. Geographic Information System (GIS) allows users to view, understand, question, interpret andvisualize spatial and non-spatial data in many ways that reveals relationships, patterns and trends in the form of maps, reports and charts. The present study details about locating a suitable waste disposal site for Mellur municipality.Selecting a suitable disposal site should adhere to the government safety norms and ensure there is no risk involved tothe people or the environment. Factor considered for site selections include natural physical characteristics as well associoeconomic, ecological and land-use factors. Multi-criteria overlay analysis has been done for solid waste disposalsite selection in this study. Geographical Information System (GIS) integrates Geographical, Geomophological andother parameters with population and other relevant data in selection of suitable disposal.
