摘要:In organisation’s culture, creative and figurative forms of language are frequentlyused to produce new, coherent representations of organisations and organisational life. Therehas been a longstanding interest in one particular form of language regarding organisations:how scholars and managers use and interpret metaphorical word combinations or metonymicexpressions, and language constructions that are used not only to reference and communicateideas but also to generate understandings of organisations. Because of the traditionally strongfocus on metaphors, the role of other tropes, particularly metonymy within the language aboutorganisations has been largely ignored. Commentaries and empirical research on metonymyto date have been restricted to local and specific uses of metonymies within small samples ofmanagerial or employee discourse. Although insightful, these studies say very little about howoften and what kinds of metonymies are used in organisations’ culture. Therefore, this articleaims to present a more detailed study of the use of metonymy in the discourse aboutorganisations extracted from on-line business journals.
