摘要:The Qur’an is the primary reference in Islam.It contains the basic principles for all mattersin human life. In order to get an idea of whatIslam has to say about business, one has firstto understand what the Qur’an says aboutbusiness. I have consulted many references onbusiness terms in the Qur’an and I have foundno other reference that is more comprehensive inanalyzing business terminologies in the Qur’anthan The Commercial-Theological Terms inthe Koran by Charles C. Torrey. Torrey’s bookdivided the Qur’anic verses concerning businessinto two categories: verses that truly deal withbusiness issues, and verses that simply utilizebusiness terms in order to explain the Islamictheology. A study of Torrey’s book reveals thatthere are many verses in the Qur’an dealingwith actual business, but there are even moreverses (around 370 verses) that appropriatebusiness terminologies for theological purposes.While this book may be criticized by theMuslim world because the author is a Jewishorientalist, nonetheless, one cannot deny thecomprehensiveness of the book in analyzingthose business terms contained therein in theQur’anic text. This paper is about an exposéof the book and its contribution to the Muslimworld.
