  • 摘要:Mobile technologies offer great scope and potential for learningin countries with moderate income rates, low literacy levels,poor educational opportunities and high ownership of mobilephones. The paper discusses the efforts made by SesameWorkshop in India to support children’s grade l and 2 readingskills, specifically foundational literacy and readingcomprehension, using mobile phones at home. It provides thefindings from a quasi-experimental design research conductedto evaluate the effectiveness of a mobile phone based readingapplication on the reading levels of children. A total of 627children participated in the research, which used an adaptedversion of Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) tomeasure children’s early grade reading skills, in their mothertongue. The findings indicate statistically significant gains forchildren in the intervention group on four of the six subtasks:letter name identification, syllable identification, familiar wordreading and oral reading fluency. These findings support thegrowing literature on the effectiveness of engaging anddevelopmentally appropriate content delivered through mobilephones to improve children’s reading skills.
