其他摘要:Afar regional state in Ethiopia comprises of a majority of pastoralist and semi pastoralists depending upon pastures growing on the degraded lands and semi arid climate for their large number of livestock. However, their forage productivity is low, unstable and unremunerative. Often this results in acute shortages of fodder during the long dry season period that can perhaps be partly overcome if the limited saline ground-water and soil resources are effectively utilized to supplement water supplies. In view of such perspectives, an experiment was conducted during 2015-16 on loamy clay soil in samara university campus to evaluate the suitability of three forage grasses to saline irrigation and optimize its schedule. Three grass species viz., Chloris gayana. Cynodon dactylon. Panicum antidotale Retz., were included in this experiment and Panicum antidotale emerged as more promising as compared to other. The overall performance of grasses was Panicum> Cynodon > Rhodes in decreasing order of their tolerance to saline conditions. Thus, it was concluded that saline soil and water use strategies for rehabilitating arid lands with above grass species may be useful for stakeholders i.e., pastoralist community in effective manner. Moreover, it would not only render these degraded lands and water to be more productive but also ensure conservation and improvement for long-range ecological security of these lands. KEY WORD: Panicum, Cynodon, Rhodes.
