摘要:The recent advances in experimental procedures in the field ofearthquake engineering research are presented. The extensive damages caused by theearthquakes during the last decade led to a gradual change in the general publicawareness of this type of natural disaster. The scientific community intensified its effortsto better understand the way different types of structures behave under seismicexcitations in order to increase their safety. Shaking table tests have the advantage of wellcontrolled large amplitude, multi-axis input motions and easier experimentalmeasurements. Their use is justified if the purpose of the test was to validate thenumerical model or to understand the basic failure mechanisms of either a structure or astructural element. Developments in earthquake geotechnical engineering, includingunderstanding the ground behaviour during seismic shaking, effects of the earthquake onthe geotechnical facilities, thorough studies on the site amplification, have also showntremendous progress. The numerical simulation is a powerful tool especially when theanalytical solutions are very complex or can not be found by elementary means. Thealready existing models have proven to be able to accurately predict the results obtainedthrough classic or innovative experimental techniques.
